Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum star in a remake of 12th Night, set in the US high school system, all about football (British/proper football, too). It's a weird premise, but it almost works. I think not really knowing the original play at all was largely a benefit, though it meant that a few of the subplots just felt a bit weird (turns out, things like the strange school names and tarantula are just nods to the play, albeit very odd ones at times). It largely falls wide of the mark in terms of social crisiscism instead, but as a skewering of American teenage norms and gender roles, it does enough to be entertaining.

Bynes has a lot of fun with the role, Tatum is surprisingly nuanced, and the rest of the teenage cast are decent enough; there's no cringey acting or poor performances here, though there's also very little in terms of substantive plot or dialogue for anyone to really get caught up with. I think the main plot beats from the play are carried over, whilst the football setting is at least a believable one, even if some of the stranger comedy antics aren't all that plausible (or even necessary, at times).

I don't think I'll rush back to rewatch She's the Man any time soon, but as a harmless teen comedy it's not awful, the characters are likeable, it made me snicker a few times, and the plot keeps you moving along. Perfectly fine.
